Crooked Island is one of the southern islands in the Bahamas, with a population of only 330. The runway is designed for small turboprop airplanes. During installation, there was no cabling, trenching, or site remediation. For years, residents had complained about the lack of runway lighting. During emergencies, residents had been forced to park their cars on the runway and turn on their headlights to act as a type of guide for landing airplanes, officials said.
